A little history The name of Chauchina is from the Latin, loosely translated it means Willow, probably named because of the many willow trees growing in the area at the time. Archaeology, unearthed in the region in 1987, indicated there were human settlements in this area from the 5th century BC. During the war between the Catholic Kings and Boabdil, the territory (probably by fear) remained almost uninhabited. Similarly, after the expulsion of the Moors and in spite of the arrival of new colonists. During the 18th century the population grew thanks to the cultivation of linen and hemp and after the war of the Independence all the area was incorporated into the jurisdiction of the Duke of Wellington. The building of the present urban nucleus was started in the middle of the 19th century and grew quickly thanks to cultivation of sugar beet, now substituted by tobacco and asparagus.
