Benaocaz in Cadiz Province a stunning mountain village over looking Ubrique.

Benaocaz was founded by the Arabs on the remains of a Roman settlement.

It is located in the Sierra de Grazelema Natural Park. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park is located in the north east of the province of Cadiz and in the north west of Malaga, at an altitude ranging from 250 to 1,654 metres above sea level.

A Special Protection Zone for Birds, the Park covers 51,695 hectares and is among the areas of greatest ecological importance in the south of the peninsula, and therefore of great significance in Spain as a whole.

The current human population is only 662 and it has a School, 4 Restaurants, a small supermarket, a small shop, Town Hall, Museum of Ecology a Plaza, a Bank, a Doctor's surgery, Public Swimming Pool and a Hotel.

The best way to travel to Benaocaz is from the road from Antiquera to Jere. Turn off towards El Bosque and then follow the Ubrique Road.

Just before entering Ubrique take the left hand turn at a garage sign posted for Benaocaz, Grazelema and Ronda.

Benaocaz has a number of places for rent for tourists and there is a campsite nearby.

For additional information, there are several websites promoting the village including one produced by the Town Hall.

There are daily buses to Ubrique, except on Sundays with onward connections to other area of Spain including Malaga, and Grazelema.

To travel to Benaocaz by car it will take about 2.5 hours from Malaga, 1.5 hours from Seville, 0.75 hours from Jerez and 1 hour from Cadiz.

For walkers there are many walking routes including the GR7 Preserved Roman Pathway which leads down through the valley to Ubrique.

Benaocaz has a small but growing foreign population including British, French and Dutch. It is an excellent area for foreign holiday homes, for people wishing to find a new life in the sun and for investing in property.
